About

Orienteering is a running-based adventure sport, in which competitors race around a set course whilst navigating between checkpoints (controls) using a map and compass.

CUOC is the orienteering club for members of the University of Cambridge. We normally have around 30 members of varying abilities, from complete beginner to international athletes. We train in Cambridge during the week and go to races at the weekend. We also organise a number of socials each term and several training camps throughout the year to new terrain, both in the UK and abroad.

What is orienteering?

Orienteering is a running-based adventure sport, in which competitors race around a set course, navigating their way with the aid of a specialised map and a compass. A number of controls (checkpoints) are marked on the map which must be visited in order, but it is up to the competitor to choose the best route between them. Typically the race is in a time-trial format with competitors running alone against the clock. Traditionally orienteering takes place in terrain such as forests, fells,  moorlands or even sand dunes. Urban/sprint orienteering takes place in urban areas and offers a different navigational challenge. The club takes part in both forms of the sport, with sprint-style events in and around Cambrdige, and trips further afield for forest events.
